Line Partner project

For our line project we knew we wanted to work with yarn and light fixtures. Our original plan was to use balloons to cast molds of yarn dipped in glue, to then create a cage-like fixture around a light source. The yarn cast didn’t turn out like we hoped, so we then decided to create a wireframe and string yarn from. We used yellow and orange yarn in a random pattern and then trimmed then roughly to even lengths. We wanted it to engage with the light, space and each person that walks underneath it.

Translucent Drawing

This piece like a lot of my previous is focused on the female figure. I knew I wanted to use tracing paper to layer the figures behind with slits cut in the paper. I then drew figures on upo paper, cut them out, and tucked them behind the slits in the tracing paper. Some of the slits were horizontal and others vertical with the figure woven in between. I also outlined the figure with an ink pen that I knew I could smear and create interesting textures and marks on the figure. I didn’t have a particular vision when placing them I just puzzled them together.

Collage

For my collage I wanted to focus on the female figure. I took lots of images related to the female figure found in magazines and some of my own sketches. I also took pieces of work I made that were painted and were of other objects like candles and a heart. I wasn’t sure what narrative I wanted to create but I started by using the xacto knife to cut all the images of the figures. I then placed them out on a red piece of paper and played around with different combinations. I ended up deciding I wanted the heart to be at the center and having the middle with the figures surrounding it. My goal was to have the figures interact with each other and connect with their surroundings.

Atmospheric Perspective Drawing

For this drawing I wanted to use an image that had high focus in the foreground and a really soft and blown out background. I knew I’d be able to achieve the contrast with graphite and charcoal.I chose a reference photo that was originally in color, but I changed it to black and white to mimic the media I’d be using. I focused first on the figure in the foreground and really paid attention to the details, depth, and values in the hair since that would be what everyone looks at first. A lot of it consisted of laying down darker values and using a brush to blend and an eraser to remove for highlights. Once I got to the background I used more charcoal to get a rich black color and used my brush to diffuse all the hard edges to give it that out of focus look.

Introduction

Hello! My name is Sydney and I’m an Art senior with a minor in art history. I’m really into exploring identity, memory, and experiences in my art. I draw a lot of inspiration from my personal life having lived in various regions of the country and growing up biracial. Most of my work consists of digital art, oil paintings, and more recently mixed media. I enjoy the challenge of exploring new media and getting out of my comfort zones. This semester I’m focusing on feminine relationships and experiences that are both universal and personal. I’m excited to be making a lot of work this semester that will allow me to explore new techniques and ideas.
