Line Project

aim of this project was to depict a puppet that was controlled by a hand to tell a story. The puppet is shown falling and having some of its threads broken, suggesting that it is freeing itself from its controller. We chose to portray the strings and wire figures with line, enhancing the “line” aspects by using a continuous line method akin to blind contour drawing. Although putting the installation on the wall is more visually appealing, our original idea called for laying the installation on a surface with a counterbalance in the arm. We strengthened the installation by suspending fishing thread from the ceiling and fastening it to the wall with thumbtacks to assure its stability.

translucent layers

For the translucent layers project I didn’t really have big idea behind the meaning. Instead I wanted to make something that I enjoyed visually and can be interpreted how you like. The concept is layers of hands holding a headless figure. The flower is supposed to be a wilting spider lily which can symbolize death, final goodbyes, abandonment, and bad luck.

collage

This collage was made with photographs and magazines from a scrap bin in class. As well as hands that I drew. I was interested in the style of the Human Wreckage collages and wanted to do something similar. The idea was that the top hand was holding the silhouette by a thread and the bottom hand was trying to reach for it. The silhouette isn’t meant to be anyone in particular rather just the hope we find through others. while the bottom hand is meant to be people reaching for that hope as its held by the hand of life and can be taken away at any time.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Christian. I’m a first-year at St. Edward’s University. I’m double majoring in Art and Video Game Development. Drawing into space was recommended to me by my drawing foundations professor Sergio. I was hesitant to take this class originally, as I heard that it was an advanced class. Though, after meeting with Hollis I decided to sign up for the class and I’m excited about this semester.

I’ve been drawing on and off all my life. During high school is when I started taking art more seriously, but once covid hit I found myself drawing less and less as it was hard to find motivation. I’m glad to finally be back on a campus and drawing once again. This class is different than what I’m used to and I can’t wait to grow as a student and artist.
