Translucent Layers

When I was given the assignment to create a translucent piece of art using transparent paper, I knew I wanted experiment with a new technique/medium . I decided to create an abstract design using watercolors, as I thought this would work well with the translucency of the paper. I really enjoyed this process, the texture of the paper made the watercolor paint create really interesting swirls and patterns. After the paint had dried, I cut the paper in half and stacked the two halves on top of each other. I was amazed at the effect this created – the abstract paintings on the bottom layer were faintly visible through the top layer. I also loved how the figures looked when light shone through the paper. Next, I drew an image of a girl holding hands with a blurry figure, and pasted it in between the two abstract layers of the translucent paper. This added a new dimension to the piece, as the image was visible through the layers of abstract circles. To add another layer of depth, I glued pages from a book onto the back of the artwork so that the faint words could be seen through the images. This gave the piece a literary quality and made it even more intriguing to look at.

Arturo Herrera is a Venezuelan-born artist whose work spans a variety of mediums, including collage, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and wall painting. He received a BA from the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and an MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He became well known in the 1990s for his collage work, which drew attention for its innovative approach to combining popular culture references with abstract forms. Based in Berlin, Germany, and New York, his work has gained international recognition for its unique ability to tap into the viewer’s unconscious and evoke memory and recollection. Today, he is considered one of the most influential contemporary artists working today, with his work being exhibited in museums and galleries around the world.

In addition to his collages, Herrera’s work includes sculpture, relief, wall painting, photography, and felt wall hangings. His felt works involve cutting shapes from a piece of felt and pinning it to the wall. His work is deeply rooted in the idea of the unconscious, and he often intertwines fragments of cartoon characters with abstract shapes and partially obscured images that evoke memory and recollection.

Collage

For the collage assignment, I initially wanted to make something sculptural using cardboard. However, I missed class and then the winter storm happened and I didn’t have a box cutter or a lot of newspapers so I just stuck to paper. I found some old art magazines I had, and all of the images had a sort of vintage vibe to them, which I thought would be cool for this project. It was hard to execute what I had in my head since I didn’t have an exacto knife, but I tried my best with some kitchen scissors. I think overall I tried to tell a story using images from the magazines, and also create a sense of nostalgia.

Atmospheric Perspective

For my first project, I took inspiration from a photo I had taken last semester at a concert. I really liked that the photo was foggy, and that the artists on stage were kind of disappearing into the background. There was already a sense of foreground, middle ground, and background in the image which made the process a little bit easier.

I decided to use charcoal for my project. At first I wanted to also use color pastels, since I really like the red in the original image. But I had no idea how to combine that with the charcoal so I decided to just stick to black and white. I am happy with how it turned out since it was my first time drawing using charcoal, but it could be improved. I think the middle ground could be even darker/foggier, and the lights and beams of light could have stood out more. I could also add more detail to the people in the audience, like adding highlights to the hair and make the phone more detailed too, and also the whole situation on the ceiling could be better. Overall, I tried my best and that’s what matters.

Introduction

Hi, my name is America. I am a senior majoring in Communication with a concentration in Critical Media Studies. I have always been passionate about film and video art, but I’ve also enjoyed drawing and painting since I was little. I took a couple of art classes in high school, but this is my first art course in St. Edward’s. Since this is my last semester, I thought I should at least take one art course before I graduate because it’s something I really enjoy and want to get better at.

I think drawing is something that I do every single day, whether it’s doodling in my notebook or sketching in my journal. Drawing is also important when it comes to film and video, at least for me. I always draw out what I want each shot to look like before I begin editing. I also want to get into incorporating more animation into my videos, and being at least a little bit skilled at drawing is important.
